SB1 Research 02

As the photographs I will be using are in the family I would consider them primary research, I am also going to gather information and memories from the travels but in addition to this I will research some of the things pictured using the internet. In the photo albums the places they visited are clearly named and I can therefore look up and research information about them. For example:

I have also decided to research into other similar photo books that may exist so that I can both get inspiration as well as make sure my product is unique in itself.

I found a few books for Bali that contain mainly photos but as you can see the majority of books about Bali, Bangkok, Hong Kong and Fiji are travel guides. The main selling point of my book will be the beautiful photographs - with the odd paragraph of information.

I continued to search for books that are more focused on the photography and came across this book which is part of a trilogy.

I found the photographers website and discovered he lives in Hong Kong but was born in Munich, Germany.

The focus of the german photographer michael wolf’s work is life in mega cities. Many of his projects document the architecture and the  vernacular culture of metropolises. Wolf grew up in Canada, Europe and the United States, studying at uc berkeley and at the folkwang school with otto steinert in essen, Germany. He moved to Hong Kong in 1994 where he worked for 8 years as contract photographer for stern magazine.  since 2001, wolf has been focusing on his own projects, many of which have been published as books.

I really like the style of his website with the small thumbnails at the bottom and photographs large with not much around taking attention away. All of the research on the internet has been helpful to see what is out there however I now need to go into shops such as Waterstones, Urban Outfitters and WH Smith to actually look inside photo books to learn about layout and what works.

SB1 Research 01

Chosen subject: A photobook including facts and history on the subject of the photographs.
  • The target audience will be people thinking about going on a gap year or hoping to travel on holiday further than Europe, for perhaps a round the world trip. The book would also be of interest to people interested in the Eastern culture and history. As well as people interested in film photography and travel.
  • For research I can use both my parents and grandparents experiences of travelling to that side of the world, as well as the photographs they have from their time away.
  • As the guide will be more of a photobook it will include large and good quality images with a small amount of text on some of the pages.
I have looked through numerous photo albums belonging to my parents and grandparents for photographs that I could use. My parents travelled through Singapore, Hong Kong, Bangkok and Bali for a few weeks in 1995 and saw a lot of interesting culture, recording a lot of it through photography. Two years later my grandparents did a round the world trip including New York and Australia but also visiting some of the same places as my parents, as well as Fiji.

I considered using photographs from all of their travels around the world, as the photographs are so full of colour and history as seen below:

NY

NY Twin Towers Skyline

NY

Fiji

However decided it would be difficult to go through so many different style photographs and colours from page to page. I do want to showcase a few different places including the best and most interesting photographs so therefore have decided to stick to photographs from mainly southeast Asia.

SB1 Initial Ideas

Studio Brief 1:

Based on the research gathered about a specific field of interest (job role, hobby, lifestyle, etc.) over summer you will develop, design and produce a bound publication. Through the summer task you will have collected numerous images and written copy about your chosen topic. This content will form the basis for the publication.

The audience, branding and positioning of the publication will depend greatly on the content. These decisions need to be addressed early on and will form the foundations for your design and production strategies. We recommend that you write a specific brief for your proposed publication that outlines these factors.

Editorial design and binding is something that you already have some experience of however, this module asks you to explore the processes and techniques involved in design production in critical detail. You will therefore consider very carefully the impact that production decisions can have on the concepts and communication of your designs.

Initial ideas for subjects:
  • An information guidebook on types of flowers/trees found around Liverpool parks
  • An excursion guidebook for P&O Oceana cruiseship
  • A photo book (film) including facts about the East (HK, Bali, Fiji, Bangkok)
Some photographs I have that could be used for the flower/tree guide:

otterspool park

otterspool park

court hey park

sefton park

sefton park

Some photographs I have that could be used in an excursion guidebook for P&O Oceana cruiseship:

pisa

isle of capri

dubrovnik

venice

After looking at the photographs above, I do believe either would make for an interesting guide/book however they just aren't as interesting as the third idea I have. The photographs below are a lot more vibrant and full of character - I believe the idea to be more unique than the other two as well with the first being a nature guidebook of which there are many, and the second basically being a journal from one of my own holidays around Europe.
