SB1 Initial Ideas

Studio Brief 1:

Based on the research gathered about a specific field of interest (job role, hobby, lifestyle, etc.) over summer you will develop, design and produce a bound publication. Through the summer task you will have collected numerous images and written copy about your chosen topic. This content will form the basis for the publication.

The audience, branding and positioning of the publication will depend greatly on the content. These decisions need to be addressed early on and will form the foundations for your design and production strategies. We recommend that you write a specific brief for your proposed publication that outlines these factors.

Editorial design and binding is something that you already have some experience of however, this module asks you to explore the processes and techniques involved in design production in critical detail. You will therefore consider very carefully the impact that production decisions can have on the concepts and communication of your designs.

Initial ideas for subjects:
  • An information guidebook on types of flowers/trees found around Liverpool parks
  • An excursion guidebook for P&O Oceana cruiseship
  • A photo book (film) including facts about the East (HK, Bali, Fiji, Bangkok)
Some photographs I have that could be used for the flower/tree guide:

Some photographs I have that could be used in an excursion guidebook for P&O Oceana cruiseship:

pisa

isle of capri

dubrovnik

venice

After looking at the photographs above, I do believe either would make for an interesting guide/book however they just aren't as interesting as the third idea I have. The photographs below are a lot more vibrant and full of character - I believe the idea to be more unique than the other two as well with the first being a nature guidebook of which there are many, and the second basically being a journal from one of my own holidays around Europe.
