The Independent designs that I found most successful through my research was Liverpool and Birmingham, both of which were inspired by the city's history or culture. Leeds is known for being one of the quickest growing city's after London and has a strange mix of rich historic buildings mixed with contemporary new builds. One thing that you notice when walking around Leeds is that they their is a lot of owl imagery. I walked around town and took a few photo examples:
Town Hall
Library
In the square
Corn Exchange
The reason that there is so much owl imagery is because owls feature on the Leeds crest (shown below). I will use try using the owl imagery as the central identifying feature of the icon, as this is a visual cue throughout the city. I'll also swatch the colours from the crest and try using these as the primary colours of the design.
Another idea is to use the initials of Independent Leeds (IL) to create the icon. The letters are very similar structure so I might be able to make some form of interesting ligature or typographic arrangement that looks better for the icon design. One issue with this however, is that face that Independent Liverpool use the letters 'IL' in their logo (shown below), so this might be too similar.
