404 5 Things I've Learnt

Colour
  1. The difference and uses of CMYK and RGB
  2. The use of IKB in design
  3. Using Pantone colours and codes for a consistent design from design to print, aswell as across different designs for the same project
  4. How to use contrasting colours effectively
  5. How colours can look different dependent on the colours surrounding it (Josef Albers)

Layout
  1. How the use of a grid is essential when designing publications such as posters and booklets
  2. Once a grid is made, it is a lot easier to just slot information and images in
  3. My design board layout has improved a lot since my first hand in - they are consistent from sheet to sheet and make the most of the space
  4. The basic facts and uses of: Manuscript, Modular, Column and Hierarchal Grid
  5. How simple guides placed in the centre horizontal and vertically can be helpful
Type
  1. Terms used in typography such as descender and eye
  2. The different kinds of typefaces e.g. serif, sans serif, slab serif, grotesque
  3. At most use 3 different font sizes in a document e.g. header, small header and body
  4. Keep the amount of different typefaces used in a document to a minimum - I have found myself using different fonts in a typeface such as bold oblique to show difference.
  5. How to place text in such a way that the audience read the information correctly - Typographic hierarchy
Format
  1. Folding techniques
  2. InDesign pagination to create a booklet
  3. What stock works best for the design in terms of weight, finish, price etc.
  4. How to paginate a document so that it prints correctly
  5. Use crop marks and bleed in documents
