SB3: Logo Development

Top to bottom:
Macho Medium
Big Moore Regular
Futura Medium
Macho Regular Italic
Bureau Grot Light
Turquoise Regular Regular
Dunbar Text Regular
Dunbar Low Light

I decided to experiment with the strongest options of the bunch in terms of weight of the typefaces. Above is Macho in the different weights and also in lowercase.

Big Moore

Dunbar Low

Bureau Grot

I decided that the strongest was Macho in medium and lowercase, it is a sans serif type that has potential to be manipulated and made into a great logotype. Above is the development of the typeface, with the name 'Appetite.'. I manipulated a number of the letters, was well as adjusting the tracking, bringing the tittle closer to the lower section of the 'i'.

In order to manipulate the typeface I had to expand and ungroup the text.

The pictures above show the comparison in the letter t on the right that has been manipulated and the standard Macho t on the left.

The bottom Appetite is the final edits of the letters in this logotype. There is manipulation of every letter, make the type more interesting and individual. The edited letters are more straight that the original, I think this works better - the letters flow more.

The next step is to create the app icon, using the logotype. It will be the simple rounded square that is seen on the App Store. The icon will feature only the logotype, simplistic type as from research I found the most successful recipe/ food apps were those that used just type rather than cliche images or illustrations indicating food. Above is some research on what kind of colours are most related to food, hunger and appetite. Ideally, when people see the app advertised or on their home screen it should encourage hunger and therefore use.

I experimented with different colours that would work, based on the research above, warmer colours are more likely to give someone an appetite. Colder colours such as blues and purples are to be avoided. The most successful colours are those below, a deep red/orange isn't seen in popular apps so therefore won't be confused at a glance, a block colour with white text stands out and is legible.

I decided that the last icon is the most suitable, more orange than red, bright F15E22 and it stands out on the home screen of icons as seen in a mockup below.
