SB3: Popular Subscription Services

Netflix

Netflix is a streaming service that allows our customers to watch a wide variety of award-winning TV shows, movies, documentaries, and more on thousands of internet-connected devices. With Netflix, you can enjoy unlimited viewing of our content without having to watch a single commercial.

Net, as in internet.

Flicks (clever/alternative spelling, flix), as in movies.

Spotify

Spotify is a digital music, podcast, and video streaming service that gives you access to millions of songs and other content from artists all over the world.

Basic functions such as playing music are totally free, but you can also choose to upgrade to Spotify Premium. Either way, you can:
  • Choose what you want to listen to with Browse and Search.
  • Get recommendations from personalized features, such as Discover Weekly, Release Radar, and Daily Mix.
  • Build collections of music.
  • See what friends, artists, and celebrities listen to.
  • Create your own Radio stations.
Spotify is available across a range of devices, including computers, phones, tablets, speakers, TVs, and cars, and you can easily transition from one to another with Spotify Connect.

"This again takes us back to my flat that I had out in the suburbs of Stockholm. Martin and I were sitting in different rooms shouting ideas back and forth of company names. We were even using jargon generators and stuff. Out of the blue Martin shouted a name that I misheard as Spotify.

I immediately googled the name and realised there were no Google hits for the word at all. A few minutes later we registered the domain names and off we went.

We were a bit embarrassed to admit that's how the name came up so our afterconstruction was to say that Spotify stems from SPOT and IDENTIFY." Daniel Ek, Founder & CEO of Spotify

Apple Music

Apple Music is a subscription-based music streaming service, like Spotify, offering access to over 50 million songs.

It's packed with features, including offline listening for when you're not connected, and it combines all your music in one place - even songs ripped from a CD. Apple Music also offers up radio stations and integration with Siri so you can control most things with voice commands.

In the just-published Steve Jobs Biography, Jobs told Walter Isaacson he was “on one of my fruitarian diets” and had just come back from an apple farm, and thought the name sounded “fun, spirited and not intimidating.”

Amazon Prime

Members receive benefits which include FREE fast shipping for eligible purchases, streaming of movies, TV shows and music, exclusive shopping deals and selection, unlimited reading, and more.

Bezos wanted a name for his company that began with "A" so that it would appear early in alphabetic order. He began looking through the dictionary and settled on "Amazon" because it was a place that was "exotic and different" and it was the river he considered the biggest in the world, as he hoped his company would be. Since 2000, Amazon's logotype is an arrow leading from A to Z, representing customer satisfaction (as it forms a smile). A goal was to have every product in the alphabet.
